About Directorate of Prosecution

Introduction – Directorate of Prosecution, Bihar

In Bihar, the responsibility of ensuring justice does not stop with investigating a crime; it continues until the offender is brought before the court and tried according to law. The Directorate of Prosecution, Bihar, under the Department of Home, Government of Bihar, was created to fulfil this important role. Every offence is not just against an individual but against society, and the Directorate represents the State in courts to make sure justice is done.

The Directorate is headed by the Director of Prosecution and works through a network of District and Sub-Divisional Prosecution Offices. At the district level, prosecution work is led by the District Prosecution Officer (DPO), supported by Sub-Divisional Prosecution Officers and Assistant Prosecution Officers. Together, they handle the conduct of cases in courts, guide investigating agencies, and provide legal opinions to government departments whenever required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensuring speedy trials and timely disposal of cases
  • Reducing pendency of criminal cases in Bihar
  • Monitoring and reporting the progress of cases across districts
  • Strengthening coordination between police, courts, and prosecution
  • Promoting inclusive justice so that all sections of society have fair access to the legal system

At the state headquarters in Patna, the Directorate also oversees administration, training of prosecutors, case monitoring, and policy support to the Home Department. In recent years, steps have been taken to improve efficiency by introducing modern technology for case tracking, use of video conferencing, and continuous training programs for prosecution officers.

With these efforts, the Directorate of Prosecution, Bihar, is working to build a system that is efficient, accountable, and people-centric, ensuring that justice is not delayed and the rule of law is upheld across the state.
